Mary Ann Shadd and her life
Mary ann shadd was Born in Delaware in 1823. Mary ann shadd was the eldest of thirteen children. She was born into a free African American family and her father was employed as a shoe maker. Mary ann shadd was always surrounded with the need to help the helpless. Her father was a member of the under ground railroad project. Mary ann shadd was a very strong women that worked hard and was able to accomplish her life long dream. She was the first female African American newspaper editor in North America where she started The Provincial Freemen, a publication for African Americans. Mary ann shadd was an abolitionist, activist, journalist, and educator. Many say mary ann shadd followed in her fathers footsteps. She was educated at a quaker school and as a result she started her own school for all races. Soon later the entire shadd family moved to Canada in 1852. Mary ann shadd encouraged many African Americans to trek to Canada. Her newspaper " the provincal freeman" started in Canada. Occasionaly she returned to America to gather information. After her accomplishments the civil war broke out and mary ann shadd went to help with the war effort. In 1863, she worked as a recruiting officer for the Union Army in Indiana and encouraged African Americans to join the fight against the Confederacy and against slavery. After the war mary ann shadd earned her law degree in1883 from Howard university. Mary ann shadd was the second African American to earn this degree. Mary Ann Shadd died in 1893.
